I love writing letters. There is nothing like waking up in the morning, having a coffee and sitting down to write to friends and relatives. People can expect to get random rants about topics that have no relevance. Maybe I just bitch about a random topics, or say something deep, or maybe even just talk about my day. I think I have sent over 40 letters in the last year. I don’t really know.
It is funny, by the time they get there, I forget about what I talked about completely. I love it and I hope the people receiving these things save them. I want to see all the letters that I have sent. It would be hilarious.
My favorite thing about sending a letter is putting it into the box and saying goodbye. I love walking up to the postal box and sliding it into the slit and boom!!!!! I cannot undo what I have just stated. It is gone, it is permeant and nobody else but the receiver will know what I have said.
Complete privacy, nobody is watching me behind the scenes. There is no way a third party can buy that data. You wont get an ad two days later for what you have stated. Whenever, I talk about or google random topics, I always get ads, and articles on my feed: “Buy Silver, Three reasons why this stock is going up” or “top 10 hikes in Colorado” like come on, at least be discrete about it. When it is in print, it is the only form of what is said. If Olivia got a letter from me and burned it, there would be no evidence of the existence.
The data that is collected from phone use is insane, but again we have to live with this, it is the norm. When you buy a phone, the data collected is worth more than the cost of the phone.
So in a time of extensive data mining, a letter is the most authentic form of communication. I hope that some day, I can look back at what I have written to people and form a story or sequence of events. Something like the writings of Benjamin Franklin would be nice. For instance, the negotiations that were made in that time were completely by letters and messengers. The foundation of American democracy can be found in the writings of Benjamin Franklin. That is fucking cool.
