A Day in Boulder

My brother Nick just had a baby: Oliver Joseph. He texted me around 7 saying that the deed was done, the baby entered the world. He was so happy; I can’t wait to be called Uncle Tony. I hope he sends the kid to me in the summers to play with his cool cousins in Boulder, or where ever I am. Time is ticking now, Nick was the first to have a child. Who will be next?

After soaking in the news, I decided to hike Bear Peak with a friend. I try not to repeat trails because I want to know all of the trails in the area. My exception is when I show a friend a hike that I really enjoyed.

Today was that day. I was going to show off my Bear Peak loop that I did a few weeks ago. It was a beautiful today, 70 degrees and sunny. I couldn’t ask for a better day to hike. We ripped through the trail with ease, until we got to the base of the mountain. That part killed us, when I did it before, it was snowy and around 60 degrees. This time it was much hotter especially when we were in the sun.

The trail that leads up to the top has no tree cover due to a previous forrest fire. So it got hot, every step was painful. My calves were burning like a bastard. We took breaks on the way up but it didn’t help much. I was the stronger hiker but we were both dying on our way up. As soon as we got up to the top, we had some snacks and found a shady spot between a few rocks. It was beautiful. Just 2 hours after the birth of Nick’s child, I was on top of a mountain overlooking Boulder. I will always remember this day.

We headed down the mountain after about 45 minutes of rest. We hiked back on the Boulder Canyon Trail which follows a river. I found a good spot for us to stop, then I took off my shoes and threw my feet into the water. The water was freezing and so refreshing. While we were sitting down by the river, someone was scaling up one of the Flatirons. He was way the hell up there. I couldn’t imagine being on the side of a cliff like that.

After cooling off, we headed back. I was beat, my legs hurt… However, as soon as we got to a little tree cover, I took my shoes off. I hiked like this for the remainder of the trail which was about 2-3 miles. There was a few rocky parts that my feet didn’t appreciate but over all, it was a pretty awesome hike.

After the hike, we grabbed some beers and cooked dinner. I continued my streak of one new craft beer a week. We cooked pesto pasta for Sunday dinner. Shannon, Misty, and I had a nice, little Sunday together. We ate in the living room because it had a better view of the mountains than in the kitchen. I could see Bear Peak from the window.
